You’ve finally admitted it.

You need some help with the house.

Woman deciding what to keep while decluttering her home

You’ve looked around for a professional declutterer, found someone who seems vaguely normal, hovered over the contact button...

And then another thought arrives.

**Oh God. They’re actually going to see my house.**

So before you contact them, perhaps you should have a quick tidy.

Which becomes a slightly bigger tidy.

Which becomes *I’ll contact them next week.*

And three weeks later, the spare room door is still firmly closed.

So let me begin with possibly the most important thing I can tell you:

**Please don't tidy up before I arrive.**

Really.

If you've contacted me because your home has become overwhelming, I am not expecting to walk into a show home.

I need to see the reality of what's happening, because that's what allows us to work out what will actually help.

And I promise you, I am not standing on your doorstep secretly scoring your cupboards out of ten.

## What is a home reset?

A home reset isn't about turning your house into somebody else's idea of perfection.

And it certainly isn't about throwing half your belongings into a skip while somebody marches around holding a label maker.

It's about making your home **work for you again**.

Sometimes that means decluttering.

Sometimes it means reorganising what you already own.

Sometimes a room has gradually become a dumping ground and we simply need to uncover what its actual purpose is.

Sometimes the problem isn't really the amount of stuff at all.

It's that nothing has a home.

And sometimes life has changed so dramatically that your surroundings still belong to a version of your life that no longer exists.

That's why every home reset is different.

## What happens before I arrive?

We talk.

That's it.

I don't like arriving at somebody's home completely blind, and I don't think that's particularly helpful for you either.

Before booking a decluttering session, I'll usually ask you to send me a few photographs of the areas you're struggling with.

**You don't need to make them look better first.**

The photographs simply help me understand what we're dealing with and what might realistically be achievable in the time we have.

We can also have a friendly, no-pressure conversation about what's happening.

You might know exactly what you need:

*The spare room needs sorting.*

Or:

*I need to get my clothes under control.*

Or:

*My kitchen cupboards are driving me mad.*

But it's equally okay to say:

**“I don't know. The whole house is overwhelming me.”**

That's a perfectly valid place to begin.

Part of my job is helping you find the starting point.

## What happens when you arrive?

We don't immediately start throwing things into bags.

First, we look.

We talk about what isn't working.

And then we choose somewhere to begin.

Usually somewhere manageable.

Because although you may desperately want the entire house transformed by lunchtime, creating chaos in six rooms simultaneously is rarely the route to feeling calmer.

We work through things together.

Keep.

Donate.

Recycle.

Move somewhere else.

Deal with later, if something genuinely needs more thought.

And gradually, the room begins to change.

## Are you going to make me throw things away?

No.

**They're your belongings.**

I can help you make decisions.

I can ask questions.

I can point out that you appear to own fourteen versions of something you haven't used since 2017.

But I'm not there to force you to get rid of things.

Good decluttering isn't about how much we can remove from your house.

It's about working out **what deserves to stay**.

There is a difference.

Sometimes people are surprised by how much they choose to let go of once they stop looking at every object individually and start thinking about the home they actually want to live in.

But those decisions remain yours.

## What if I'm embarrassed?

This comes up a lot.

People apologise.

They apologise when I arrive.

They apologise when they open cupboards.

They apologise for bags.

They apologise for paperwork.

They apologise for rooms they haven't entered properly for months.

Sometimes they start explaining the entire history of the house before I've even taken my coat off.

You genuinely don't need to.

I've experienced clutter myself.

Around 15 years ago, during the breakdown of my marriage, my own surroundings became cluttered and overwhelming.

That experience was one of the reasons I eventually **chose to train professionally in decluttering and organisation**.

So when I tell you there is no judgement, I mean it.

I understand how a home gets there.

Often there wasn't one dramatic moment when everything suddenly became cluttered.

It accumulated while you were busy surviving something else.

## What if I have ADHD or find making decisions difficult?

Then we work with that rather than pretending it isn't happening.

Decision fatigue is a huge part of decluttering.

If your brain is already overloaded, asking yourself hundreds of questions about hundreds of belongings can become exhausting very quickly.

That's where having another person beside you can make an enormous difference.

My professional background also includes more than 30 years of working with people, alongside my work as a **Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Coach, Clinical Hypnotherapist and NHS-approved Health & Wellbeing Coach**.

So I'm interested in more than where your toaster should live.

I'm interested in **why the systems you've tried haven't worked for you**.

There is very little point in creating an immaculate organisational system that requires you to become an entirely different human being in order to maintain it.

Your home needs to work with the way you actually live.

## What if the clutter is connected to something emotional?

Often it is.

A box isn't always just a box.

It might contain belongings from somebody who died.

Clothes from a previous stage of your life.

Things from a relationship that ended.

Children's belongings from a childhood that disappeared far quicker than you expected.

Paperwork from a difficult period you would rather not revisit.

Or possessions belonging to somebody whose home you've had to clear.

We don't bulldoze through those things.

Sometimes the quickest way through a room is actually to slow down for five minutes.

Acknowledge what something represents.

Make the decision.

And then move forward.

Decluttering can be incredibly practical work.

But occasionally, you're not simply clearing a cupboard.

**You're closing a chapter.**

## How much can we actually achieve?

More than most people expect.

Four focused hours with somebody beside you is very different from spending an entire Sunday wandering between rooms, discovering old photographs and somehow ending up cleaning the cutlery drawer.

But I also won't promise we're going to transform a heavily cluttered four-bedroom house in an afternoon.

That's why I like seeing photographs beforehand.

We set a realistic goal.

Perhaps that's one room.

Perhaps several smaller areas.

Perhaps the wardrobe that has been annoying you every morning for two years.

And sometimes we achieve far more than expected.

The important thing is that by the end of the session, you can **see a difference**.

## What happens to everything we remove?

Where possible, I encourage belongings to have a sensible next destination.

Good-quality items can go to charity.

Paper and appropriate materials can be recycled.

Some things simply need disposing of responsibly.

I can take a reasonable amount of **charity-shop donations** with me by arrangement, but Fresh Start Home Co isn't a large-scale rubbish or house-clearance service.

And I actually think that distinction matters.

The aim isn't to arrive, throw everything into a van and make the problem disappear.

We're making considered decisions about what stays in your life and what is ready to leave it.

## Do people only book one session?

Sometimes.

For a particular room or problem area, one focused session can be exactly what's needed.

Other people have several sessions because they want to work through a larger home gradually.

Some prefer weekly sessions for a period.

Others book occasional or monthly sessions when they need another push.

There isn't a correct way to do it.

And unlike cleaning, decluttering isn't necessarily something you need to pay for forever.

**Once the clutter is gone, it's gone.**

The aim is to leave you with a home that's easier to manage and practical strategies that make it less likely you'll end up back where you started.

## What does a successful home reset actually look like?

It doesn't necessarily look like Instagram.

There may still be books on the table.

The dog may have left a toy in the middle of the floor.

There may be washing in the basket because apparently humans insist on continuing to wear clothes.

Success is simpler than that.

You can use the room again.

You know where things are.

Opening a cupboard doesn't annoy you.

You stop moving the same pile from one surface to another.

You can invite somebody into your home without immediately scanning the room and wondering what they're thinking.

And perhaps you walk into a room that you've been avoiding for months and think:

**Oh. There you are.**

Send me a few photographs.

Tell me what's driving you mad.

Tell me which door you've stopped opening.

**We just need to find the first place to begin.**
